Certification Requirements

Only those participants who complete the full training and all requirements to receive an SEP certificate may be called a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner or SEP and claim to practice Somatic Experiencing®, which is a legally protected trade name.

Participants who do not meet the requirements listed below retain their status of ‘students in training’. All Somatic Experiencing Practitioner’s (SEPs) worldwide, who have earned the SEP certificate, have completed ALL of the in-class hours PLUS all additional personal and supervision hours.

Attendance

There are three training years with two 6-day modules per year providing 36 days for the whole training. If you miss a part of a module it is possible to make up the lost time by completing one supervision hour for each day of non-attendance in addition to the required supervision hours (see below).

If for exceptional reasons an entire module is missed then this can by agreement be completed by watching the videos of the module and completing a minimum of two supervision hours to cover the experiential exercises.

Session Requirements

A participant is required to receive a minimum of 20 Personal Sessions and 20 Supervision Session (aka Case Consultation) hours from SEI approved providers if they wish to become a certified SEP.  The required sessions can be taken at any time during the three year training period. Supervision hours must be completed within one year of the completion of the Advanced II module. Participants will not receive an SE certificate or be considered an SEP until the full requirements for both personal and supervision hours have been met.

All sessions are to be recorded on the Student Portal Session Log to which you will be given access on registration. Each session entry must be confirmed by the session Provider.  Before booking sessions, please check that the Provider is approved at your current training level.

The cost of personal sessions and supervisions are the responsibility of the participant and are based on private agreement between the participant and the session provider. Session costs are not included in the tuition fee. The cost of sessions varies in different parts of the country and between providers.

Personal Sessions

20 hours of personal sessions

15 hours of your personal sessions must be taken with session providers who are assisting on your training. This is to ensure that you have support with material that may be relevant to your level of training. The assistants who will be offering individual SE sessions during your training will make times available in the mornings before the training, during lunch breaks, and in the evenings. Session sign-up sheets will be available at the training. Many participants find individual sessions helpful at this time in order to process material that may come up during the training

5 hours of personal sessions can be taken with the junior assistants on your training or any other SEP, in person or via Zoom, giving you access to SEPs worldwide.

Supervision Sessions

20 hours of supervision sessions

Supervision must be received from an approved provider in person or via online.  They may include a mix of individual and group sessions.

6 hours (minimum) must be with a Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute faculty member in either the group or individual supervision format. SE trainers are faculty members. SOSI aims to organise at least 5 Faculty Group Supervision sessions during the course of the three-year training. Generally these are held the day before the start of a training module.

10 hours (minimum) of supervision must be Individual supervision sessions - not group sessions. This will ensure that the supervision requirements will be met with a participant personally presenting at least 10 cases.

4 Hours (minimum) can be group supervision sessions taken with SEP’s qualified as Supervisors

Individual supervision sessions will be offered during the training by those assistants who are approved to do so.

Individual Supervisions:
For individual supervision sessions, 1 supervision hour equals 1 credit hour.

Group Supervisions:
For group supervisions of 3 or more people, 3 supervision hours equals 1 credit hour for each participant.

Approved Providers

A list of current approved providers is available on the SEI website. The list is updated on a quarterly basis. UK practitioners can also be found on the Somatic Experiencing UK website: SEAUK UK practitioners

We encourage our participants to get sessions from a variety of approved session providers. They will have been taught by different faculty members and each have their own modality and style of working so a richer learning experience. It is possible to receive these hours via Skype as well as in person during training times.
